ancient Hawaii there were "Places of Refuge" for people
who had broken a If a person was able to get inside the HEIAU without being captured by surrounding troops who guarded the area to prevent these people from getting in easily. Sometimes they needed to swim in the shark infested waters to get into the HEIAU. The photo shows an example of spirit images surrounding a sacred enclosure with a storage hut known as Pu'uhonua place of refuge in south Kona on the Big Island. A day to experience the energy and observe the large sea turtles playing in the bay.
The Petroglyphs The Hawiian petroglyphs are pictures and symbols cut into the rock surface by the people of prehistoric times. The word petroglyph is derived from the Greek roots (Petros- meaning stone and Glyphe meaning carving). The oldest of these found are the engravings of glacial age animals caved in caves over 10,000 years ago. The stone carvings are scattered around Hawaii and constitute the only prehistoric art now owned by private collections or enclosed in museums. You will be able to experience these for yourself. What do they mean? According to Hawiian legend the petroglyphs were made by distant priests and had meaning to the initiated. Many of the designs depict animals, birds, concentric circles and sometimes unfinished forms. It is possible that they will unleash some understanding with in your being of times and knowledge from long ago. Mauna Loa the Home of Pele The Hawaiian name "Mauna Loa" meaning "Long Mountain" is appropriate for the part of Mauna Loa that extends for about 120 km from the southern tip of the island to the summit caldera and then east-northeast to the coastline near Hilo
Hawaii's legendary goddess of fire, Pele will greet us as we view steam vents, sulfur banks, lava and a'a lava, hike through lava tubes and across the floor of Kilauea Iki crater. If Pele cooperates, we'll view molten lava as it seeps into the sea. Rising gradually to more than 4 km above sea level, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on our planet. Its long submarine flanks descend to the sea floor an additional 5 km, and the sea floor in turn is depressed by Mauna Loa's great mass another 8 km. This makes the volcano's summit about 17 km (56,000 ft) above its base! The enormous volcano covers half of the Island of Hawai`i and by itself amounts to about 85 percent of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined.
Mauna Loa is among Earth's most active volcanoes, having erupted 33 times since its first well-documented historical eruption in 1843. Its most recent eruption was in 1984. Mauna Loa is certain to erupt again. (Current activity is not a worry - reported as at January 22, 2002. Mauna Loa Volcano continues its quiet, showing no signs of the restless activity expected before the next eruption. Seismic monitoring indicates no unusual or significant earthquake activity beneath or within the volcano. Continuous tiltmeter data, dilatometer data, and nearly continuous GPS data show no significant deformation of the summit caldera (Moku`aweoweo), upper rift zones, and outer flank) Take a virtual tour click here!
